"Teatro in times of plague"

10 new cases for a total of 392; 24 deaths. Progreso continues with 6 cases of which one has died.

The World Bank has approved a grant of $119 million for COVID relief. That should do wonders for the condo market in Miami.

We did the Easter vigil in the house in the afternoon: Martín filmed it, then edited it and put it out on the airwaves at 7:00. I saw a bit of it on the parish’s Facebook page; he did a good job with very limited means. A bit of the symbolism of the light in the darkness gets lost when you do it at 3:30 on a hot afternoon.

Yesterday the police issued an order for essential buying for next week, then two hours later cancelled it. In the evening there was a cadena nacional with JOH announcing essentially the same thing on a national level. That starts tomorrow. I am number 9 which I think means I can go out on Saturday. People aren’t going to do this.

Sunday, April 12, 2020 (Easter Sunday)

We filmed a community Mass in the morning, which Martín edited in the afternoon and which was sent out in the late afternoon via Radio Progreso and Facebook of the San Ignacio parish. Funny how we’re learning to live with this thing.

I walked across the campus to the gate in the afternoon to meet Luis and do a couple of business things; that was as close as I got to going outside today. There was considerable activity on the street. Today things were to be open for people whose last digit is 1. Probably the banks and the supermarkets check your id, but the people in the market undoubtedly sell to all comers. And everybody is out of food. Reports from the field inform me that downtown was jammed.

It was really hot today; it probably passed 100F. This is summer, always the hottest time of year. Holy Week is traditionally the hottest week of the year (it isn’t anymore, as it has gotten hotter – but that’s another story) and everything closes and everyone who can goes to the beach. The popular religious tradition is not centered so much on the official liturgies (although those are always jammed) as on Processions (which draw massive participation). There were, of course, no processions this year.

To all the scattered members of the Warner clan: I remember so vividly those Easter Egg Hunts at Goat Hill, Home of a couple of old goats. Happy Easter to all.

Keep safe and wash your hands.

Jack.
