"Teatro in Time of Plague – 43"

MS Word ate a whole week of entries and I had no backup. You will be delighted to know that things haven’t advanced with the two mobile hospitals: there are 78 containers which they are making all sorts of fuss about in Puerto Cortés. There are supposed to be 5 more hospitals on the way, with arrival time set as the end of August.

Sunday, July 19, 2020 - 32, 793 cases, 891 deaths.

We’re suddenly over 1,000 cases a day.

JOH has ordered that the red tape be dispensed with and the containers let out of customs.

Those of you who have been here (mostly) know the Garifuna village Triunfo de la Cruz, on the Caribbean, where we have a beach house. The community has been in a major fight with the authorities from Tegucigalpa, who want them to sell out so that the area can be transformed into a tourist haven. Yesterday at daybreak, a group of men “dressed as policemen” (as the official description has it) entered the village during curfew and kidnapped four or the village leaders. No sign of where they have taken them. This strikes me as a strange parallel to the abductions in Portland, only a day later.

Monday, July 20, 2020 - 33,835 cases, 900 deaths.

There are notes that they found the bodies of the four kidnapped Garifuna leaders, but the news hasn’t been published in any of the big media. Probably they are trying to hush it up.

At the same time, there was a massacre in the area of Yoro: 9 victims.

And they continue inspecting the 78 containers that have the two hospitals.

Later: The news of the finding of the bodies of the kidnapped Garifuna leaders seems to have been false; there are many calls on social media to release them, wherever they are.

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 - 34, 611 cases, 935 deaths.

The story of the appearance of the bodies of the kidnapped Garifuna leaders was false; they remain disappeared, and the people have staged a considerable protest (including blocking the main highway) demanding they be released. They have come up with good visuals in the social media, following the lead from the north: Garifuna lives matter / Las vidas Garifunas importan.

Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 35,345 cases, 988 deaths.

The Garifuna leaders remain disappeared. The longer the time, the less there is hope. It seems clear that this has to do with their refusal to sell their land to the tourist development.

38 of the 78 containers have been examined. They contain hospital things.

The massacre in Yoro a couple of days ago turns out to be a vengeance meted out in a family feud.

Keep safe and wash your hands,

 Jack
